Jon Jakeway, 1967
Jon decked out for a night ambush.

Ken Kotyluk
This picture was taken by a combat photographer, I believe his name was VanOlstien...something like that. This was one of Charlie company's first firefights and first casualties. The medic without the helmet is Ken Kotyluk. The wounded guy I remember well, but can't recall his name. Ken was killed in action around April 23, 1968. Here is what I remember in brief, and I don't claim to be 100% accurate...my memory is
sketchy at best. Second platoon was in front of us (1st platoon). A few
VC were hiding in spider holes and opened up on 2nd platoon's frontal
elements. The fire came thru to 1st platoon and put us down on the
ground. They called for medics and guns to the front. Ken raced by me
headed for the front while I was still on the ground. By the time I got
to the front the shooting had stopped, and Ken was about where he is in
this picture.

LZ Activity
Choppers coming in...always a pleasant sight.

March to Chopper Pad
The long walk from the company area to the chopper pad. Every 187th trooper will remember this.

Over C Company Hooches
1st platoon flying over camp. Charlie company hootches below.

Perimeter Exit
This was our main perimeter exit from the battalion perimeter at Phouc Vinh. Don't know what company is seen here leaving.

Phouc Vinh Base Camp
Close up view of 3/187th perimeter.

Phouc Vinh - First Day
Our arrival at Phouc Vinh. Cpt. Bond at far right.

Pre Mission Snooze
Sgt Wanland, 1st Platoon C company grabbing some sleep before the
call to saddle up and make the long walk to the chopper pad.

Tower at Dusk
Once of the many observation/machine gun towers on the Phouc Vinh perimeter. As Lt. Caldwell so aptly put it, "If ever there was an RPG target..."

Village
C company checking out an unknown village.

Song Be Bridge Guard
C company arriving to pull bridge guard. Other 187th elements can
be seen leaving. All the companies took turns guarding this place. The bridge can be seen at far upper right. It was not bad duty...just boring...

C Company Main Street
Charlie company's main drag. Our equipment in the middle of the
street means we were preparing to move out.

Commo Guys
One of my rare base camp clowning around photos. Bottom bunk is Jimmy Mitchel. The guy's name on the top bunk is DuWayne
Anderson. Wiggins is on the right. These guys were all RTO's...headquarter RTOs for Cpt. Bond and Cpt. Williams.

Fire Fight
This picture was also taken by the same photographer mentioned prevously. I believe that this is the same firefight.
Again, I think that this is 2nd platoon. The medic without the helmet I
remember like yesterday, but cannot remember his name. I don't know who
the two helmeted guys on the ground are. The wounded man was one of our
rangers. We only had two or three rangers in the outfit...Lt. Caldwell
being one of them. After one of my lengthy disscussions with Lt.
Caldwell I think that the wounded man is Sgt. Tucker..who in fact did
die of his wounds. Jon Jakeway said, "It is my greatest hope that other 187th guys will see these photos and be able to add some clarity and facts to them. We shall see."

First Squad
1st squad,1st platoon, C company prepped for a night ambush patrol. Left to Right; Jakeway, Sgt. Simone, Sgt. Wanland, Wayne Dube.
Note: Everyone in this picture left the country wounded except for
Dube.

Rubber Plantation Patrol
1st squad, 1st platoon, C company on a normal patrol through a
rubber plantation in the Phouc Vinh area. I'm (Jon Jakeway) the guy with the M-60. Can't remember who was in front of me and turned around to snap this
photo.

Lift Off
187th troops lifting off. This is a scene repeated over and over again. It could be any outfit, anywhere in Vietnam...but this is us.

Jungle Patrol
1st platoon in thick indian country. This kind of terrain was typical of what we had to hump and fight in. I can't remember whose picture I took here. Someone in my own 1st sqaud I would assume.
